Does Nigeria have a specific marriage age, if yes, then I guess 8years, else jail Yerima! The Nigerian constitution and Islamic sectorial rights which comes first? Does it respect our women and not consider our women as slaves to their husbands? Are they actually seen as equal to the man? If yes then where is the place of training the girl child?

How will a man give out his 8years old daughter in marriage to a man as old as himself and yet fill happy, demanding whooping sum of money for dowry against the girls wish and heart desires for an adorable man of her life and future, all in the name to stop fornication? Is this not slave trade, child trafficking? I weep for these people, I weep for my beloved nation, Nigeria! And yet a senator, one who is involved in the act who enacts laws that govern a nation would out-rightly call that has been justified by one late prophet dead long ago and hence should be bought by the country, because the prophet did that at nine, so he is justified, not by the territorial laws, but by those of a late prophet. And yet he could come out openly and justify that as matters of his personal life. What a shame!

*sobs*

I vote Nigeria as the most confused nation, both on earth and in the world beyond. A confused moral value system, a confused religious system, confused legal system, governance and even the senate system.

Is there even a system in Nigeria? Do we have a unique value system? A moral system in place?

Following the entire hullabaloo yesterday as concerning the marriageable age for women in Nigeria, the real story is this:
"The clause that is really causing this unnecessary hullabaloo is Section 29 (4) (b). That clause has always been part of our laws, but the Senate moved to remove it as infringing on child’s right by making every married woman an adult. At the taking of the vote for the first time, they got two-third to remove it from the Constitution. But Yerima stood up and whipped up religious sentiment by galvanizing his Muslim brothers who ignorantly believed him into action. When the peace was threatened, David Mark, the Senate President capitulates and asked that the vote be taken again, at this point they were no longer able to garner two-third votes to remove the provision from the Constitution, so it remains.

Now to the legal issue: Section 29 (4) CLEARLY states: “for the purposes of subsection 1″ Section 29 subsection (1) CLEARLY states: “Any citizen of Nigeria of full age WHO WISHES TO RENOUNCE HIS NIGERIAN CITIZENSHIP (emphasis mine) shall make a declaration in the prescribed manner for the renunciation”

This is called “narrow definition” Subsection (1) narrowly defined under what circumstances the definitions stated at clauses (a) and (b) would be applicable. Therefore clauses (a) and (b) of section 29 (4) are only relevant to “renunciation of citizenship” alone. What made this clearer and should leave no one in doubt is the fact that clause 29 (4) (a) re-emphasized that “full age” shall be 18, but if you are already married, for the purposes of renunciation of citizenship you shall be automatically qualified to do so even if you are not 18 yet. Because you are deemed of “full age” for renunciation reason based on the unambiguous definition given by subsection 29 (1) In any case S. 29 (4) (b) is referring to someone already married not about-to-marry.

As a matter of fact, if you ask me, the Constitution as it is, threatens Yerima status than support it." Says Ayo Turton, a USA based lawyer.

"…In conclusion, it is said that a large number of Nigerians don’t really know the law or their rights, and I think the lawmakers fall into this category. Those who pushed to delete section 29(4)(b) did it on the grounds that it contradicts 29(4)(a) and infringes the right of a child by allowing early marriage. I think otherwise. I believe section 29(4)(b) of the constitution deals with the age of a woman after the fact of marriage, and what rights she has at that time." Myne Whitman

The Question now is: Does Nigeria have a specific marriage age? If yes then it must be 8years or else senator Yerima should never yet remain as a senator, estaiblishing laws that he can not keep and if he could come out openly and retaliate his critics with this speech "Nigeria has many uncountable problems and none of them is early marriage. As a matter of fact early marriage is the solution to about half of our problems. For those who wonder if I can give my daughter(s) out in marriage at the age of 9 or 13, I tell you most honestly, I can give her out at the age of 6 if I want to and its not your business. This is because I am a Muslim and I follow the example of the best of mankind, Muhammad ﺻَﻠَّﻰ ﺍﻟﻠَّﻪُ ﻋَﻠَﻴْﻪِ ﻭَﺳَﻠَّﻢَ .

In Islam, marriage is not only about sex, it is about family and helping one another in achieving their goals, which is the attainment of Paradise.

In Islam, a girl can be given out in marriage as early as 6 years old, but consummation of the marriage can only be done when the girl becomes physically mature and she gives her consent to it because unlike English law, it is not permissible for a man to rape his wife in Shari’ah Law.

So what can anybody tell me?

~ I live in a city where young girls at the age of 12 have already became serial fornicators and cannot count the number of man they’ve had sex with.
~ I live in a City where primary school children disvirgin themselves behind toilets on Valentine day.
~ I live in a city where young girls flood the street at night looking for men that would give them N500 to have sex with them.
~ I live in a city where parents send their daughters out overseas to prostitute and send dollars down.
~ I live in a City where Government officials pick undergraduates from University car parks with Coastal Buses to wild sex parties.
~ I live in a city where abortion is so common that even a Chemist store owner can perform abortion with just N2,500.

These are your daughters, and this should worry you and not Yerima’s private matters. So ask me again why I support early marriage and I will slap the Jinn out of your head." then he must be questioned.

AT what age are our girls made to marry, Nigerians? That is the question! At infant or as adults and if it is the latter, when a so-called religious group breaks the law what must be his punishment? But again I would like to refer to that same section 29 (4)(b), which already imports from section 29 (4)(a) that the marriageable age of our women as adults now is 18 then why on earth shall a senator go unpurnished? and even come out openly to justify his claims?

How could he so say: "The Prophet Mohammed married at the age of nine, therefore any Muslim who marries a girl of nine years and above, is following the teachings of the Prophet," he told Al Jazeera. And if this contradicts the Nigerian law what is the say of the law makers?

My advice to Yerima on his speech:
1. You can not in an effort to clean the bath, throw away the baby and the water, Sir. You can not to help cure fornication force our daughters to marry at age they are not in the international law deemed fit or old enough to make decisions for themselves. And marriage is honorable enough to be the most decision of the parties involved and not that of those of the parents, because the parents are not he ones who actually get involed in case of chaos in the marriage.
2. Does the Islamic law not consider our women as slaves to their husbands? Are they actually seen as equal to the man? If yes then where is the place of training the girl child? And yet no Islamic women would speak up against this.
3. How do you explain the word, "consumation" in marriage, Sir? That the young girl you brought from Egypt does not answer the stutus quo of a wife, you don't ever touch her or demand the male's right for sex? And if you do, how sordid does it seem to you to go into a young girl of such age, just to prevent her from fornication. It is exactly what slave trade is! What child trafficking is! That girl have chose against her rights because she was chosen for! She has her right and let her grow to that age enough to choose for herself. You personal opinion should not violate the right of our young ones. You are happy living the life you are living they got the right to be happy also.
